HISTORY Aeryn was born to a middle class Muggle family with whom she lived out all of her before Hogwarts years. It was clear from the beginning that she didn’t fit in, though she was obviously not an outcast. No one knew what was wrong with her, why she wasn’t fitting in, only that the older she got the more she stuck out. And then came the day that explained it all. Her owl came and delivered her letter, when she was eleven, like all other Hogwarts students, and she packed her things and left. After struggling to find the things she needed for her new school and the challenging task of getting there, she became a promising student.

Aeryn lay on her bed, kicking her feet as the seconds ticked by, each one bringing her closer to her goal. This year would be the year, she was sure of it. The tension in the air, the thick book she leaned over, her dad’s snores from the room down the hall. It all felt right, like this night would be special. It felt like this night would live up to everything she dreamed it would, that she would not regret staying awake. Looking up from her book, she studied the view outside her window. It was beautiful, the stars all shining, the moon full and high up in the sky. The young girl’s eyes slid back to her book, running over the words, but not comprehending anything. The excitement was too much for her, the idea of finally reaching this major goal of hers was making focusing a bit too tough. These minutes were not passing fast enough! Switching her position, she lay on her stomach, her hands holding up her head and little elbows against the bed. Long brown hair hid her round face from view, but also everything from her view, except the novel beneath her. What time was it now, she wondered, making a gap in her hair to see the clock.
Certainly Aeryn could not fall asleep a mere two minutes before midnight! Jumping up, she began to hunt for a bookmark. When the time came, she did not want to have her book out still. Glancing around her room, she searched for anything that could do the job of page holding. Once a week, Aeryn’s mom made her clean her room, and her birthday week was no exception. Due to this, nothing was on her floor to use to mark the page. She probably had a real bookmark in a drawer somewhere, but sliding open her drawers seemed like too much effort. Dropping to her tiny knees, she lifted the blanket slipping off of her bed up and peered underneath her mattress. There was always readily available junk under there, and this time was no different. Reaching for a questionably clean sock, she stood up and stretched her tense body, reaching up, out, and down. After a few satisfying cracks, she hopped lightly on her bed and threw the sock on the book. Her bed creaked beneath her as she jumped onto it, sounding loud in the quiet of the night. She froze for a moment, hoping her easy sleeping mom didn’t wake due to the noise. When the silence returned, she continued closing the book and moving it to her nightstand. When she was done, Aeryn looked at the clock once more.
Aeryn smiled hugely at the analog clock that proudly read out that it as officially 11:59. Exactly 60 seconds, and she would achieve her plan! Perfect. Pulling her blankets up on her bed, she thought about last year. She had fallen asleep long before midnight a year ago. Sitting on top of her freshly straightened blankets, she examined her room. It was different form her friends, but also not quite her either. There was no frilly pink, no puppies or rainbows or butterflies. A tall bookshelf took up an entire wall of her room, filled from top to bottom with books Aeryn had read. None of her friends had that for sure. Her other walls were just painted blue. No stickers, patterned paint, or posters. She wanted something there this time next year. It looked to empty, now that she really took in her room. Her eyes swept around the room in a circle, freezing on the clock.
Aeryn’s eyes widened. It felt like an hour had passed, but that clock most definitely read 11:59:30. Looking our her window once more, she checked to see where the moon was. If it had moved far, her clock was broken and she had stayed up late enough. She yawned, opening her mouth as wide as it could go. The crater filled rock way up in the sky was most definitely very close to where it was last time she looked. Her clock was in perfect working order, it was apparently her own head that was not right. Bringing her eyes back into her room, she focused on the clock once again.
Aeryn was so close! Her goal was going to be achieved! Instead of looking away from the clock like she had on previous times, she kept her eyes glued to it. This was it, she was going to absolutely make it to midnight. BAM![/size] Aeryn flinched and turned to her window, where a weird bird flew. She quickly came to the conclusion that this bird had just rammed into her window, thinking that it was not there. This idea was supported by the outline of the bird on her previously unmarked window. Letting out a puff of air in frustration, her eyes flitted back to her window. She missed it! That stupid bird made her miss it! It was 12:00:08! Getting off of her bed and stomping to the window, she planned on giving that dumb animal a piece of her mind whether or not it could understand her. The window was open and her hands were on the screen when a momentous observation hit her and she froze. That bird was in fact an owl. That owl was still flying right outside her window, staring at her. That owl staring at her had tied to it’s foot a note. Blinking her eyes a few times, she suddenly rushed into action. Maybe the note was for her! That would be so awesome. Rushing open her screen, she stepped back from the window, where, sure enough, the bird came in and sat on a part of her book shelf. After a moment, the owl lifted the letter burdened foot toward Aeryn, who reached for the note. Untying the knot, the ripped open the sealed envelope and tugged out some official looking paper. Maybe she shouldn’t have taken this from the owl. It probably wasn’t for her. Lifting her head to look at where the owl was, she realized the owl was gone. Uh oh. Leaning out her window, she whispered, “Come back…” Yelling was out of the question, unless she wanted to wake her parents and get in trouble. Besides, would the owl even understand her? Probably not. She might as well read the letter, she decided. Maybe it would have a name and she could give it to whoever it was supposed to go to.
Aeryn gasped as her eyes read over the words. It was for her, and this was an epic moment of her life. She was supposed to go to a special school called “Hogwarts,” whatever that was. This very September! She was a witch! Maybe she didn’t stay up the whole night, maybe she had fallen asleep and this was a dream. If that were true, then pulling her suitcase out of her closet and putting all her clothes in it wouldn’t matter. So she did. Digging through her closet, she pulled out a huge blue suitcase, complete with wheels. She quickly unzipped it and threw open her dresser drawers, pulling out all of her clothes and dumping them in. Aeryn looked around her room, and upon spotting her hairbrush, dumped that in too. If this was a dream, then she could go to the bathroom and grab her toothbrush with no real life consequences if she woke her dream parents. Slipping out of her room, she dashed to the bathroom, grabbed her toothbrush, the toothpaste, and ran back to her room. More stuff followed the hygiene products into the suitcase; a stuffed animal, all the money she had, the book she was reading, sock bookmark and all, some hair ties, her boots, her flip-flops, other shoes, a sweatshirt, a rain coat, and more. If this were a dream, zipping this suitcase and walking out the front door with it would be fine. Grabbing the letter from Hogwarts, adrenaline pumping through her veins, she did just that, and appeared on the streets.
Her goal was accomplished, and so much more. She had stayed up until midnight on her eleventh birthday, like she had planned, and so much more that she hadn’t planned, but that would change her life from that decision to leave her home forward.
