There were lists everywhere, literal and figurative. Lists of things to do, places to be, things to get, lists of things you are and things you aren’t. And on the list of things that Jeremiah was not sat meekly the words “shy,” “unaware,” and “modest,” among others. On the list of things he was, proudly it was written, “punctual” and “intelligent,” among a vast array of others. And thus he was walking, head held high, just when he had planned, to the Ancient Magicks classroom. He was fairly sure his teacher would be there, and he himself had just finished classes, so it was the perfect time to try. The alternative being to come in early before class the next day, but he had no inclination to do that.
Jeremiah had stopped by his room long enough to catch a seething glare from one of his roommates, who deemed him not nearly laid back enough to converse with, drop off his books, and change clothes. Unlike his brother he did not walk around in jeans and a wife-beater. Ever. But he did put on a white short sleeved button up shirt and a pair of loose fit jeans, over his black converse shoes. Although he didn’t mention it out loud, he contrasted himself with Casey as much as he could, without it hindering his regular routine.
After a short expanse of time walking, Jeremiah knocked on his teacher’s door, leaning against the wall outside when he didn’t get an immediate response. He wasn’t going to stand there in suspense, in case Orson wasn’t actually there, and he wasn’t going to open the door without a response, in case he actually was there. So he waited, closed his eyes and imagined, for a moment, what his vagrant runaway of a brother would have looked like. He would have his ugly cowboy hat on, tilted to cover his eyes, arms folded, legs crossed, and he would have found a way to get a piece of straw and stuck it out of the corner of his mouth. He wanted to be a cowboy half as much as he wanted to be what he was. And he was proud of what he was, where as Jeremiah just viewed it as foolhardy immaturity. Their parents were proud, but worried, and Candice was elated. But Jeremiah knew he wasn’t his brother, and he was comfortable being who he was, if only everyone would realize that, and if no one mentioned Casey again at Hogwarts, it would be too soon.

Cato walked up to his classroom with his eyes tied to a book. He appeared he was really interested in the book. The book he was engrossed with was called 'Great Spells for the Bored Wizard'. He chuckled. He unzipped his leather pouch on his wrist with his teeth, without taking his eyes off the book, and let his wand slide down into his hand. He cast an anti-lock charm to unlock his door and quickly went inside without taking notice of Jeremiah. He sat down at his desk, where he had given his lecture earlier that day, with his eyes still staring at the same page of the book. He pointed his wand at the book. The book immediately closed with his eyes still distantly looking for the page that was there. Within a few seconds his eye readjusted and he was able to concentrate again. "amazingly fun that book is. . . putting a charm to keep one's eyes glued to a page." He chuckled again and then realized the atmosphere in the room. The quiet that felt more than just a simple 'no-one is there' quiet. "Hello?" Cato said with a tone of wonder. "Do come in, I'm sorry." It was the first thing he could think of to say, not that he knew anyone was outside waiting for him.

Jeremiah wasn’t waiting for too long, but he got the impression Orson was not, in fact, in his classroom. He was only slightly disappointed, but decided it didn’t matter much. The man didn’t know how to help Jeremiah, he had merely been considering talking to him. He wanted to make friends, Orson did, and Jeremiah knew more about the school than him, so he could help. Maybe Jeremiah liked talking to him, he was arrogant and acted like he was better than most people, but there was something comforting about talking to someone about his thoughts. Maybe it was the fact that Orson didn’t know him, or his family, and that he didn’t already have a standing opinion of him. Maybe.
All of a sudden, before Jeremiah had thought to leave, Orson walked by. Right past him. He was holding a book, and clearly absorbed in it as he opened his door with his wand and walked right in. Jeremiah snorted at his professor’s completely oblivious behavior, and then pushed the door open just a bit, and heard,
“Hello? Do come in, I’m sorry.”
“Thank you.” Jeremiah said, walking in and closing the door behind him as he leaned against it, “Interesting book, I suspect?” Jeremiah asked. The book was closed by now, but if he’d been so involved in it earlier, Jeremiah hoped it was interesting. He didn’t exactly suspect that Orson had the same taste in literature as he himself did, but it didn’t matter. He wasn’t here to talk about books; he was here to talk about… most anything besides books.
“How has your day been?”

“How has your day been?” Cato tried to think about his day. Not very momentous, and slightly boring. It was proof of his boredom that he got charmed into staring at the book. Thats the type of thing he wouldn't usually do.
"Eh, confusing I would think is the word I'm looking for." He shrugged. It was true. It was a confusing day, but not in the traditional sense of the word. "The day was boring, but so much work and new things going on that I am not used to. . . Man, my head is throbbing." He rubbed his head. "Never realized the work our teachers did for us when I went here." He caught himself. He felt like an old man ranting about the glory days. Enough ranting about how 'back in my day, it wasn't so hard'. He chuckled a little and went on to ask Jeremiah a question. "How was your day? Have much homework?" Cato was starting to feel a little awkward. He was sitting, and a student was standing. It was just one of those "respect" things he was conscience about. He grabbed his joke book from his desk and stood up. He placed it in one of his drawers and then stopped to think. "Jeremiah, do you like joke books?" He asked with a slight bit of curiosity.

Jeremiah watched without a word as Orson seemed to consider his day. Whatever had happened, he had to wonder how Orson ended up so engrossed in a book, “Eh, confusing I would think is the word I’m looking for.” That was a new one. Jeremiah didn’t say anything, still. People learned quickly that Jeremiah was either quiet, or vocal. He did not ramble, he knew what he wanted to say and how he would be saying it. If he didn’t not want to say something, or if he did not know how to say it, he did not say it. At least until he figured out the precise way he wished to say something. He was calculated, opinionated, and educated. A combination best left to someone more humble than he, but alas.
“The day was boring, but so much work and new things going on that I am not used to… Man, my head is throbbing.” Orson said, rubbing his head, Jeremiah knew there were spells for that sort of thing, but offhand he couldn’t recall one, “Never realized the work our teachers did for us when I went here.”
“Mmm,” Jeremiah conceded, as a prefect he knew more about the faculty’s going-on’s than the majority of the other students, if not all of them. Also with a cousin in the faculty he got to hear a lot more, which gave him an advantage of some sort, perhaps in the sympathizing department. Probably best since he wasn’t a heavily sympathetic person by nature, “You sound like Kelsey.”
“How was your day? Have much homework?” Orson asked eventually.
“Nothing eventful. I saw my cousin and mentioned you to her, she said she might drop in to say hello. My sister checked on me to make sure I was having a good day, because she felt so inclined, and I only have a few assignments. I just got out of class, so I will get to those when I get back to my room.” Jeremiah said, watching as Orson stood up, putting a book into a drawer and then stopping,
“ Jeremiah, do you like joke books?”
“No, sir. I’m not very inclined toward jokes in any form.” He said, with the slightest shrug of his shoulders.

“You sound like Kelsey.” Cato raised his eyes when Jeremiah said the name. He had his head lowered so Jeremiah wouldn't see his confusion on his face. He didn't know who 'Kelsey' was, but he decided it wasn't exactly important to know. If it was, Jeremiah would fill in the blanks. He concentrated on Jeremiah, listening in and filling his head full of the information he was recieving, despite his headache from information overload. “Nothing eventful. I saw my cousin and mentioned you to her, she said she might drop in to say hello. My sister checked on me to make sure I was having a good day, because she felt so inclined, and I only have a few assignments. I just got out of class, so I will get to those when I get back to my room.”
He thought about all of that. It was all ramble to him. He couldn't figure out why he couldn't pay full attention. It must be that his mind was somewhere else. He didn't show any signs. He put up his book and thought about what a topic. "Jeremiah, do you like joke books?”
“No, sir. I’m not very inclined toward jokes in any form.”
"That is a shame. I think everyone should have a humorous side to them." He thought about all the things that went on in his day. He wasn't for sure what to do. Was he supposed to ask what Jeremiah wanted, or what he wanted to do? The constant confliction of a teacher. It would probably be best to stay professional.
"Would like any help on your assignments? Or perhaps you have some interesting question to ask of me?" Cato said with hidden regret. He didn't necessarily care for a conversation, but his concentration would have to improve if he was to talk with Jeremiah. He mentally shrugged. "Whatever,"

It never occurred to Jeremiah that Orson would forget something the two men had discussed earlier in the day. It rarely occurred to him that anyone would forget something he said. It was not, in this instance that he was haughty, it was merely that he assumed people would remember things, as he usually remembered things, and as he had been taught it was rude to forget things people said, even if you could not help yourself. So he never thought to explain who Kelsey was, as he had mentioned his cousin being a teacher earlier in the day, and assumed that Orson would know who that was, and would connect the two references.
As Jeremiah replied that he did in fact not feel any inclinations toward jokes, he noticed Orson’s distracted nature. At least to Jeremiah it seemed distracted, perhaps it was something else. He recalled after a moment that Orson had mentioned his head hurting, or something like that. Maybe now is a bad time? I didn’t exactly call ahead. Hmmm
“That is a shame. I think everyone should have a humorous side to them.” Orson said, still seeming a bit distracted to Jeremiah.
“I said I am not inclined toward jokes, which does not mean I do not have a sense of humor, and despite the rather inflexible impression I might give off, I do have a sense of humor, I merely do not see the need for jokes.
“Would you like any help on your assignments? Or perhaps you have some interesting question to ask of me?”
“Not particularly. I was merely coming to see if you wished to continue our conversation from earlier, perhaps try to help me pick a career again, or you could meet my cousin if you were so inclined, I mentioned her earlier, or anything else that suited you. But I get the impression you are distracted or perhaps ill.” Jeremiah said politely, if emotionlessly.

Cato smiled. "I didn't mean it quite that way," he said referring to calling Jeremiah humorless. He never could speak exactly what he meant, but it wasn't important enough to him to correct himself. He smiled because Jeremiah claimed he was distracted. Perhaps it was true, however, he wasn't so distracted to prevent him from normal functions. "So you would like discuss your career or show me your cousin?" He thought out loud. He wasn't for sure which one he wanted to do. Both we very interesting to him and both presented something he could learn from. Talking about Jeremiah's career did sound like something he could help Jeremiah with. He decided to leave the option up to Jeremiah. Therefore, it was no surprise when Cato said, "Hmm, which one would you like to do first?" He smiled again while talking off his cloak and casually setting it on his chair.

“I didn’t mean it quite that way.” Orson said after Jeremiah’s reference to humor. Jeremiah said nothing, merely gave a look in attempt to convey a sort of whatever you say thought. He could said it wasn’t what he meant, but Jeremiah saw no other interpretation for what he had said, but he felt no reason to argue, and left it at that. He should explain himself more appropriately, Jeremiah thought briefly. It was expected that if you said something and it was misunderstood that it was the fault of one of the party members, due to either poor articulation or poor understanding. Jeremiah was not so proud to think a misunderstanding was never his fault, but at the moment he was certain it was not his fault.
“So you would like to discuss your career or show me your cousin?” Orson said aloud, but Jeremiah got the impression it wasn’t an actual question, “Hmm, which one would you like to do first?” He asked with a smile, and now it was a legitimate question. Jeremiah’s preference? I give others options so they pick, not so they tell me to pick.
Jeremiah gave it a moment’s thought and upon deciding that if the conversation lagged, Kelsey would no doubt feel inclined to say something to liven things up, he said, “I suppose I would suggest meeting my cousin first. If you have no problem with that. I believe she it probably tending to the herbs or some such work related activity.”
It wasn’t how he’d initially planned on spending his day, but he would make things work, it was something he did.

“I suppose I would suggest meeting my cousin first. If you have no problem with that. I believe she it probably tending to the herbs or some such work related activity.” Cato smiled. He honestly didn't care what he did with his day. He always had time on his hands for some adventure. Sure going to see Kelsey wasn't exactly what most would call an "adventure", but it is a difference between daily routine.
"That would be lovely." Cato said as he grabbed a book and motioned for Jeremiah to lead the way. They shuffled out of the room and Cato unzipped his wristband letting his wand slide smoothly and flawlessly into his hand. He locked his door with a charm and looked toward Jeremiah. "Okay, lets go." He said with a hint of eager pleasure. It wasn't that he was excited. It was more that, it was a valid and interesting reason to put off grading papers and other teacherly duties. With a wand still in hand, Cato threw his book in the air and juggled it around using his wand. It wasn't just the simple levitation charm any person in school would know. Every once and a while the book would fall due to some blunder Cato did. Cato smiled each time and flipped the book in the air with a flick of his wrist and continued the process again. "Practicing some spell, kinda tricky."

“That would be lovely.” Orson replied, grabbing a book. Jeremiah was beginning to predict their differences would make problems. Orson was a bit distracted seeming, and happy. Jeremiah was considerably cold and calculating. Jeremiah also didn’t know what his cousin would think of her fellow professor, but he was going to wait and find out.
“Okay, let’s go.” Orson said. He was excited, Jeremiah just nodded casually, walking in front of his professor, “Practicing some spell, kinda tricky.” He added, causing Jeremiah to glance back and see him flicking his wrist around and moving a book.
“I imagine so.” Jeremiah admitted without interest, thinking. Well if he couldn’t pretend to be interested and engaging with his professor than he had no place in the acting profession, and if he couldn’t find interest in things people found boring, even himself, then he shouldn’t justify law. So with that Jeremiah decided to act more amiable with his profressor, but didn’t say much on their way to the Herbology greenhouse, “My cousin isn’t too shy, so if the comes off a bit harsh, it just takes some time to get to know her.”
When he knocked on the glass and opened the door Jeremiah spotted his cousin looking over a book larger than any he’d ever owned, but as soon as she saw Jeremiah she stood up, running over to give him a hug. Brown hair pulled back behind her ears and she’d already changed into a half calf skirt that Jeremiah would assume was silk, and a button up pink blouse with short sleeves, “Jeremiah, I didn’t expect a visit today, how are you?”
“Comfortable.” He said, giving her a simple smile which she rolled her eyes at, “I brought one of my professors to meet you,” He said, motioning to Orson, “Cato Orson.”
“Yes, I know who he is. Hello.” Kelsey said politely, keeping an arm around her younger cousin as she smiled warmly at her colleague.

“My cousin isn’t too shy, so if the comes off a bit harsh, it just takes some time to get to know her.”
Cato let his lips form what he would call a "cute frown". The face was basically that of a pout; however, the intention that he was going for was that of complex thinking mixed with disliking. He disliked a situation that he was unprepared for. He was unprepared on how he was to meet a fellow colleague. Was he to be informal? Was he to shake hands? If she is on the bit of a harsh side, will shaking her hand be a bad move? Should he have prepared a few ancient magicks as a demonstration for her?
All these questions ran through his head as Jeremiah opened the door. The words and embracing and everything that was going on was a dim mummer to Cato as he raced through his thoughts. "Shake, no Shake? Does she have both hands to shake with? Would I make her self conscience if I tried shaking the hand of a person who only had one hand? I wonder how fast a person with one hand can draw their wand. . . " Cato snapped right back to the real world in time to fully grasp the situation, understand what went on and hear his Colleague speak.
“Yes, I know who he is. Hello.”
Cato decided to hell with having hands. . . and outstretched his hand making sure that it was the one that could shake her available hand. "Hi. I'm the new Ancient Magicks teacher, but you already knew that. . . "

Jeremiah had no inclination to Orson’s confusion on the way to meeting Kelsey. As far as he was concerned he was going to see his cousin. A woman who he got along with more than most people, and who got along with him more than most people. Kelsey was harsh, and Jeremiah was cold. But she could be friendly, she could turn that charm on more than Jeremiah. Jeremiah could act friendly, but Kelsey could actually be friendly, more easily. Besides, Orson was just going to speak to a colleague, how could that be stressful?
“Hi.” Orson said, extending a hand which Kelsey shook with a smile, “I’m the new Ancient Magicks teacher, but you already knew that…”
“Yes. Around here we tend to keep track of people. My prefect cousin could tell you all about that.” Kelsey said with a smirk that Jeremiah ignored, “Has Jeremiah been a good student?”
Jeremiah cast her a disapproving glance. Of course he was a good student. He just so happened to be distracted that day, but that wasn’t important. Kelsey was only two inches shorter than Jeremiah, so it made looked down at her less formidable, but she knew he was pretending to be insulted, which is why she ignored his glance.
“I went to Hogwarts, and when they got an opening in Herbology just after my graduation, I took it wholeheartedly, so this is my second year. Jeremiah hasn’t been able to get rid of me. But I suppose he is going to be running off on his own soon. I say that to say, I was somewhat in your boat last year. Were you a student here before?” She asked. Jeremiah considered her question. If they’d gone to school together Orson might know something about Kelsey. After Casey had graduated, Kelsey took to some wild behavior, and being that Jeremiah was in his third year at the time, he heard about it every day. For a while. Then people realized he either didn’t care, or didn’t appreciate it. She didn’t really date around as a teacher, but as a student, it had gotten bad. Luckily the children kept it from their parents, otherwise things might have gotten awkward.
