Department of Magical Law Enforcement
Amelia Bones was the Head of this Department [OOTP7] until her death in 1996 [HBP1]. The identity of her successor is unknown, but after the Death Eaters took over the Ministry in 1997, the Death Eater Yaxley became Department head [DH12]. Bartemius Crouch Snr also led this department in the past [GOF27]. This is the largest department in the whole of the Ministry of Magic, and is located on Level Two of the Ministry building [OOTP7].
In addition to the other sub-sections there are two types of law enforcement squads in this department: Aurors (who work for Auror Headquarters) [OOTP7], and Hit Wizards (who work for the Magical Law Enforcement Patrol). An Auror's job is to track down and capture Dark Wizards [GOF11], whilst the Hit Wizards handle criminals and minor incidents [POA10].
Sub-departments include:
> Auror Headquarters
For details, see main Aurors article.
> Magical Law Enforcement Patrol
> Wizengamot

Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures
[/size]The Head of the Department is unknown, although Amos Diggory works as an employee in this section [GOF9]. The main duties of the department are to regulate the breeding of magical creatures and to ensure that wizards do not break the laws of importing dangerous creatures from other countries. It is split into three main divisions - the Beast Division, Being Division, and Spirit Division - along with the Office of Misinformation, which is not included within the divisional structure. This is the second-largest department in the Ministry, behind only the Department of Magical Law Enforcement.
Beast Division
> Dragon Research and Restraint Bureau
Known employee: Newt Scamander (dates unknown)
> Centaur Liaison Office
> Werewolf Capture Unit
> Werewolf Registry
> Pest Advisory Bureau
> Committee for the Disposal of Dangerous Creatures
Walden McNair was an executioner in this section [POA16, GOF33].
Being Division
> Office of House Elf relocation
Known employee: Newt Scamander (circa 1915 - 1917)
> Werewolf Support Services
> Goblin Liaison Office
Known employees: Cuthbert Mockridge (head of department until circa 1995), Dirk Cresswell (head of department circa 1995 – 1997 [HBP4, DH12])
Spirit Division [OOTP7]
No sub-departments of this division are currently known
Office of Misinformation
This represents the last resort in the case of a magical emergency. The Office of Misinformation is brought in to explain things away to Muggles with the help of the British Prime Minister, providing a plausible Muggle explanation without causing suspicion [HBP1]. For example, the Loch Ness Kelpie was once in a very compromising position when caught on a Muggle camera and it was only with the help of the Office of Misinformation that the situation was salvaged [FB].
Department of International Magical Co-operation
This Department was headed by Bartemius Crouch Senior until his death in 1995 [GOF12]. Other known personnel in this Department include Percy Weasley, who worked there in the 1994/1995 session [GOF5]. The duties of this Department are to liaise with other magical institutions in foreign countries, and to agree on International Magical Laws.
Sub-departments include:
> International Magical Trading Standards Body
> International Magical Office of Law
> International Confederation of Wizards, British Seats
Department of Magical Transportation
The head of this Department is unknown, although it is likely that the man who arranged the Portkey for the Quidditch World Cup, Basil, works here.
Sub-departments include:
> Floo Network Authority [OOTP7]
This section regulates the Floo network and also monitors the activity of all fireplaces.
Known employee: Mrs Edgcombe [OOTP27]
> Portkey Office [OOTP7]
> Apparition Test Centre [OOTP7]
> Broom Regulatory Control [OOTP7]
Department of Magical Games and Sports
Ludo Bagman was the Head of this Department until 1995, when he presumably forfeited his post after fleeing the goblins to whom he owed gambling debts [GOF5]. Previous known employees include Bertha Jorkins (now deceased) [GOF5] and Hamish MacFarlan, who headed the department for a time [QA]. According to "Quidditch Through the Ages", the Department of Magical Games and Sports was founded in 1750. This Department was responsible for the organising of the Quidditch World Cup in 1994 [GOF7].
Sub-departments include:
> The Official Gobstones Club [OOTP7]
> The British and Irish Quidditch League HQ [OOTP7]
> The Ludicrous Patents Office [OOTP7]
Department of Mysteries
Details of this department are shrouded in… well… mystery. Employees in this section are known as "Unspeakables" and the only ones who are known are Croaker, Bode [GOF7] and the traitor Augustus Rookwood [GOF30]. The Department itself is located on Level Nine of the Ministry [OOTP7] and consists of a number of rooms, each containing strange and secret things: one is stacked with row upon row of prophecies, another contains brains floating in a green liquid, whilst yet another contains an archway to what may be the world of the dead [OOTP34]. Each is accessed from a rotating room designed to disorient any outsider, and it seems that visitors are very much disouraged.
Magical Maintenance
It is unknown where this department is located, though it may be a division of one of the other departments. Members of Magical Maintenance seem to be the custodians of the Ministry. They are responsible, as the name implies, for maintaining the upkeep of the Ministry, including deciding what weather to display through the Ministry's enchanted windows [OOTP7] and repairing magic gone awry within the premises of the Ministry, such as rain inside an office [DH12]. Reginald Cattermole is the only known member [DH12].
